The Experiment of Professor Polgas by Sarah Brownlee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Review: THE EXPERIMENT OF PROFESSOR POLGAS
Imagine H. G. Wells' ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU if the mad scientist was less arrogant and more humanitarian, if he cared not for revenge but for human expansion and evolution and spiritual transformation. That will give you a glimpse at this novel. Professor Polgas is, admittedly, a scientific genius. But with genius always come arrogance of rivals, nay-sayers, and fear of the new and unknown. As H. P. Lovecraft wisely noted, the most prevalent human fear is fear of the unknown. When the Professor, after two diligent decades, develops a serum to help each individual transform at will into her or his "animal within," his enemies discover his success, and try to ensure permanently the end of this avenue of research.
Author Sarah Brownlee marvelously delineates her YA protagonists and builds up readers' empathy for them. It's easy to suspend disbelief and become caught up in this scientific, yet very spiritual, tale.
